NESFO was formed in 1980 and was registered under the Industrial and Provident Societies Act, 1965, on 9th May 1980.
NESFO is a Producers’ (Catchers’) Organisation set up under legislation of the EU’s Common Fishery Policy, to assist members as catchers and producers of fish within the economic area for which it is “recognised” by the EU – Peterhead to Avoch.
The Organisation currently has 35 member vessels and is actively engaged in improving their operational environment and their overall efficiency through improved marketing and securing additional quotas. The main species targeted by NESFO members are haddock, whiting, saithe, monks, megrim and cod; the main fishing methods are pair trawl, seine net and twin trawl. The bulk of the fish landed is taken in the North Sea with lesser amounts coming from the West of Scotland area and The Irish Sea.
Who Are NESFO?
We are a producer organisation. We are approved by the Government and the EU. Annually we submit an operational plan and an activity report through the Scottish Government to the EU Commission.
At the moment we currently have 25 fishing vessels in our membership. The vessels range in size from a ten-metre vessel just working six or seven hours in a day, to 24-metre vessels working mainly Scottish waters into the Norwegian sector.
We have no pelagic vessels. It is mainly white fish and nephrops vessels that we have. The 25 vessels grossed in the region of £24.5 million last year. The main role of NESFO is the administration of quotas.
Our aim is to secure sustainable and profitable fisheries and a high degree of industry involvement in all fisheries management decisions. From a Management perspective, NESFO operates a system of individual vessel quotas. Each owner receives a weekly breakdown of what has been caught to date. If an owner decides he requires additional quota, this tends to be done through the P.O.
